Newark’s nightmare
NEW YORK/Newark Liberty International Airport has been in the news for all the wrong reasons after a series of issues led to hundreds of flights being cancelled.
On April 28, an air traffic control (ATC) equipment failure at the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Philadelphia Terminal Radar Approach Control Facility (TRACON) left controllers unable to track or speak to aircraft operating in and out of Newark for 90 seconds. The issue led to around 1,800 flights being delayed or cancelled. Further equipment outages occurred on May 2, May 11 and May 20. The latter occurred around 1135hrs local time and lasted around two seconds, the FAA reported.
