Welcome
Hello and welcome to the July issue of Airliner World, incorporating Airports of the World. Aviation is full of passionate debates – are you a window-seat enthusiast or an aisle-seat devotee? Do you prefer the grandeur of the Airbus A380 or the timeless elegance of the Boeing 747? Recently, one carrier in particular has been sparking considerable discussion: Global Airlines. The ambitious start-up has been steadily preparing to launch operations with its single Airbus A380 and, here at Airliner World, we’ve closely tracked every fascinating development.
I’ll openly admit – I began firmly in the sceptic camp. Indeed, the odds remain stacked against Global Airlines. Successfully launching a new carrier is challenging enough, and doing so with the largest passenger jet in the skies is an even greater undertaking. However, Global Airlines has made significant strides, notably operating a series of flights – albeit indirectly through its ‘operational partner’ Hi Fly Malta. My own perceptions shifted significantly after flying from Manchester to New York/JFK aboard its Airbus A380, 9H-GLOBL (c/n 120). Despite extensive coverage – a lot of it being not that glowing – of its inaugural Glasgow flight, the Manchester experience genuinely stood apart. It was exceptional – certainly among the best flights I’ve experienced. I’ll be providing a detailed account in next month’s issue, accompanied by an exclusive interview with Global’s ambitious founder, James Asquith. What became abundantly clear during my journey was the unwavering enthusiasm and determination of the Global Airlines team. Passion alone will not guarantee success, but it certainly fuels remarkable achievements along the way. And one thing we can surely all agree on: increased competition in the aviation industry is a welcome development. Fresh ideas, new approaches and bold ambition serve to make the sector stronger.
