Irish investigators have concluded that a sudden nose-up control input during a bounced landing led to a tail strike involving an Aer Lingus Airbus A321LR at Washington/Dulles.
The jet, EI-LRD (c/n 9187), was operating from Dublin on August 30, 2023, when it encountered gusty wind conditions on approach to runway 01R. The Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) report said that, at around 300ft, the aircraft deviated above the glideslope and the captain – who was pilot monitoring (PM) – remarked to the first officer (FO), who was assuming pilot flying (PF) duties, that the runway was very long.
