Heathrow’s expansion hopes
LONDON/HEATHROW HAS unveiled a £10bn expansion plan that will see it increase passenger numbers by up to 10 million by 2031, up 12% on current levels. Cargo operations are also expected to increase by approximately 20%.
Heathrow Airport Limited (HAL) presented its 2027-2031 plans to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) on July 11. In the proposals, the airport stated that it aims to create new space within its existing terminal infrastructure, equivalent to the size of ten football pitches, for restaurants, shops, and lounges. This would be done by redeveloping the Central Terminal Area, demolishing the old Terminal 1, extending Terminal 2 and building a new southern access road tunnel. It also plans to improve security waiting times and baggage handling facilities.
