LATE COLOUR
While much of gardening is about looking forward, in midsummer we can be forgiven for swimming in the moment, gleefully letting waves of colour wash over us. It’s tempting to think that the season will take care of itself, no planning required. After all, garden centres are brimming with plants designed as a quick fix to fill any late-summer gaps. But what are your options if you want to keep the interest going for months, not weeks? Plants to take us through July and August and into September come in two main types: hardy perennials and half-hardy perennials. Nurseries sometimes plan their propagation in such a way that hardy perennials that would naturally begin flowering in June, actually start a little later.
