Need a smile? We’ve got miles of them in the Summer 2021 issue of AMERICAN ROAD as we seek out mirth everywhere it’s made.

Our travels begin with “The Three Stooges Go to Yellowstone: The True Story of Kook’s Tour”—a feature that finds America’s favorite knuckleheads on the loose in the wilds of Wyoming and Idaho. Few casual Stooges fans realize that the madcap trio once set out to film a series of travelogues for television—and got as far as the Grand Tetons and Priest Lake in the process. Have you ever yearned to hear Moe Howard talk about the Oregon Trail? Here’s your chance, soitenly!

“American Road’s Comedy Road Films” celebrates the greatest highway comedies ever set down on celluloid—from It Happened One Night (1934) to Paper Moon (1973) to O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000). Then we visit with comedian Paul Reubens, whose Pee-wee Herman films have taken us on big adventures and holidays. From there, we head to the Red Skelton Museum in Vincennes, Indiana, and puzzle over an odd mural that evokes the Marx Brothers in Fairchild, Wisconsin. We step back in time to Cottage Grove, Oregon, where Buster Keaton filmed his silent masterpiece, The General (1926), and charge ahead into the Blue Room of the newly inaugurated National Comedy Center in Jamestown, New York, where George Carlin’s Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television are enshrined inside their own exhibit.
