American Road  |  Winter 2017
In this issue of American Road, we reminisce. We wrap up our celebration of our fifteenth year in publication by recalling the people who made the miles so memorable.
“American Road ’s Old Friends”—our first feature—revisits unforgettable personalities who graced our pages in years past. They include professional mermaid Barbara Wynns, who swam in the blue bowl that is Weeki Wachee Springs; McGill Drugstore curator Daniel Braddock, who’s still talking about Ipana toothpaste; Mothman Museum creator Jeff Wamsley, who continues to chase the elusive bug-man around Point Pleasant, West Virginia; and hotelier Stefania Jozic—on the Rip van Winkle Trail in New York’s Catskill Mountains—still welcoming dreamers who wander into New York’s purple hills. We drop into Tombstone, Arizona, to check in with Terry “Ike” Clanton—cousin to the Clantons who fought the Earps in the Gunfight at the O. K. Corral—and we spend a night with the ghost that’s inhabited Oregon’s Yaquina Bay Lighthouse for 144 years.
“Cover Stories” takes stock of images that have graced our front pages since our magazine’s 2003 debut. And our departments honor the authors who helped develop them, including the National Road’s Frank Brusca, US Highway 6’s Joe Hurley, and the Lincoln Highway’s Gregory M. Franzwa.
Finally, we give you the chance to look back, too: We announce the winners of our “Take Fifteen!” Photo Contest that asked you to share your favorite memories from the past Fifteen years.
