ONE of the first sales of 2017, the books and manuscripts offering at Tennants in Leyburn on January 4, included this one-page letter penned by George Monck in Scotland to Henry Cromwell in Dublin.
Dated September 24, 1658, Monck, who was head of the army north of the border, mentions the recent death of Oliver Cromwell and pledges his loyalty to Cromwell’s other surviving son Richard as Lord Protector.
