A textbook Renaissance style jewel by Carlo Giuliano (1831-95) led a strong jewellery offering at Thomas Watson (24% buyer’s premium) in Darlington on March 21. Made around the time Giuliano opened his own shop in Piccadilly in 1874, this lozenge form jewel, left, combines old cushion-mine cut diamonds, seed pearls and ‘en ronde bosse’ enamel in deep blue and white. A near identical pendant was sold for £4000 (estimate £1000-2000) at Cheffins in Cambridge in September 2016. However, this example, in a fitted Carlo Giuliano box, came with a more confident guide of £7000-9000 and sold to an online bidder against a collector on the phone for £13,000.
