Half-length portrait of a woman reading by August Macke – £3700 at Canterbury Auction Galleries.
A collection of early 20th century German works on paper, brought to England in the possession of a German academic who fled the Nazis on the eve of the Second World War, appeared at Canterbury Auction Galleries (20% buyer’s premium) on April 4-5.
The six-lot group had been consigned by his descendants. Research by the auction house revealed that two sheets of pencil and charcoal drawings in the small collection were by the German Expressionist and leading member of The Blue Rider art movement, August Macke (1887-1914).
