Patek Philippe presentation pocket watch – £7000 at Andrew Smith.
A gift from the founder of the Tata global business empire to the architect who designed his Bombay headquarters, this late 19th century Patek Philippe gold hunter pocket watch was an eyecatcher at Andrew Smith (19% buyer’s premium) at Itchen Stoke on September 12.
The 2in (5cm) diameter, five-minute repeat striking watch with sweep stop-watch hand was in undamaged, working condition and in its original monogrammed leather case. The inscription to the reverse read From Jamset jee N Tata to James Morris, the Architect of Esplanade House, Bombay 1890. The building, still standing, was recognised with the UNESCO Asia Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Restoration in 2014.
