From Dickens to a dodgy bishop

London auction features a remarkable range of varied subjects across its hundreds of lots

Books and works on paper

1. This elaborately gilt black morocco binding on a 1677 edition of Richard Allestree’s The Gentleman’s Calling has in the past been attributed to Samuel Mearne. However, it is so similar in style and tools used to a binding attributed by Maggs in a catalogue of ‘Bookbinding in the British Isles’ to John Harding, that Forum favoured that attribution. It sold at £2200.
2. Dating from 1778, a Bible printed in Edinburgh and bound there by James Scott(?) boasts an extraordinary contemporary binding of polished calf with elaborate gilt decoration that includes a spear-toting Chinese fisherman and two birds, all three perched on tall columns beneath a canopy of flowers and pomegranates. It sold at £3200.
