The book beautiful

How the private press movement – and a focus on the craft of book making – created a collecting niche

Golden Cockerel

The Four Gospels of the Lord Jesus Christ, one of 500 copies printed on Batchelor hand-made paper by Golden Cockerel Press in 1931. Eric Gill designed both the typeface and the wood-engraved initials, and worked closely with Robert Gibbings to decide the layout.

This copy, numbered 300 in the original pigskin over cream buckram binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, sold for £7000 at Forum Auctions in 2016.

Gregynog Press

The Fables of Esope, number 8 of 25 specially-bound copies from an overall 1931 edition of 250. The illustrations and initials are by Agnes Miller Parker, with the dun morocco ‘Caxton’ binding by William MacCance and George Fisher of the Gregynog Press Bindery. Sold for £2600 at Bloomsbury Auctions in 2017.
