Rare Books London

The festival of events grows in popularity each year. Talks, tours, walks – plus flagship fairs and auctions – are all part of the 2018 schedule

Dubbed ‘London’s festival of old and rare books’, Rare Books London’s events run from mid-May to mid-June. Below we list the talks, tours and walks that form part of its roster. The fairs and auctions it promotes are part of the separate calendars on the following pages.

For the third year running, Antiques Trade Gazette is the official media partner of the festival.

London dealer Beaux Books will bring to the ABA fair in Battersea this original stage design by Eugene Berman (1899-1972) for a production of Don Giovanni first performed in 1957 at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

The design is untitled but the similarities of it to another sketch suggest it is for Act II, Scene 1 outside Donna Elvira’s house.

The 4¼ x 6¾in (11 x 17cm) pen and ink watercolour is priced at £1450.

Among the Polar literature to be found at the PBFA fair is this copy of Two Years in the Antarctic by Albert Armitage (1864-1943).

Armitage was second in command and navigator on Captain Scott’s Discovery expedition from 1901-04. His book exposes the lighter and anecdotal sides of the expedition and is illustrated throughout by fellow explorer Edward Wilson (1872-1912).

This first edition copy, published by Edward Arnold in 1905, is priced at £750 from Devon dealership Kingsbridge Books.
