We have had two national referendums in the past two years. The Scottish independence and Brexit votes, in September 2014 and June this year respectively.

Neither can be said to have taught us much, other than we cannot believe a word our politicians tell us. The fact is that we were just not well enough informed to reach a reasoned and settled view on either referendum question.

I do not think it unreasonable to say that the real result of both referendums was further division and confusion of the British people – the last thing we needed in this competitive and, in many ways, threatening world.
