Why do we need a second berth?


Mr Yates from Catacol, in his letter in last week’s Banner, questions the ability of a ferry to manoeuvre and dock stern onto the linkspan in the inner berth at Ardrossan, the ‘Irish berth’ as we knew it in the 1970s.

In those days the MV Lion (the Belfast ferry) managed to reverse in on a daily basis, so it is clear that the new Arran ferry could mange the same act, although one ferry front loading at the outer dock and the other rear loading in the inner dock would surely complicate matters when the weather, or other things go wrong and berths need to be changed.

More puzzling is why we need a second berth at Ardrossan. The two ferry summer timetable requires only one berth at Ardrossan, so why spend money on a second? And why spend yet more money on a two-storey terminal building in Ardrossan? Spending a 10th of the money to tidy up the harbour infrastructure would seem to make more sense.
