Letters to the Editor

Breaking point

There has recently been correspondence in the national press that the ferry scheme has proved to be disastrous for the residents of Cumbrae. Sadly, RET, without the infrastructure and services to cope with it, is not unique to our neighbour.

We on Arran are also having some difficulties with the consequences of RET as the prerequisite and very necessary provision of two fulltime ferries over the full year have yet to appear and will not do so until the mid summer of 2018.

A larger vessel for the Lochranza to Claonaig route is long overdue. Visitors are mainly able to plan their ferry crossing weeks or months ahead while island residents and small businesses requiring short-notice journeys for a variety of reasons find access to those ferries increasingly difficult, even without bad weather interruptions.
