SCOTTISH Athletics has won the ‘governing body of the year’ award at the Team Scotland Scottish Sports awards.
The recognition comes as a result of an outstanding year for the country’s sport, both in terms of participation and performance levels.
Some of Great Britain’s highest-performing athletes of 2016 have come from north of the border, including world No.1 and British record-holder over 1500m, Laura Muir, and fellow Olympic finalists and Scottish record-holders Lynsey Sharp in the 800m, and Andrew Butchart in the 5000m.
Along with the 15 Scottish athletes who represented Great Britain at the Olympics in Rio, a further six participated at the Paralympics.
Libby Clegg came away with two gold medals in the T11 100m and 200m and Jo Butterfield won gold in the F51 club throw, and the pair were nominated for the para-athlete of the year award, while T35 sprinter Maria Lyle, who came away with two bronze medals and a silver from the Rio Paralympics, picked up the ‘Young Athlete of the Year’ award.
