Elliot Giles: plans to make an impact at the Rio Olympic Games
MARK SHEARMAN
AMOTORBIKE trip into north Africa was how Elliot Giles planned on spending his summer before Rio Olympic selection threw a spanner in the works.
The 22-year-old British 800m champion and European bronze medallist quite simply did not anticipate what was in store for him this summer.
“The plan was for me to run a few quick times to see if I could earn a bit of money and then I would go down to Africa with my girlfriend but of course that plan has now gone out the window because of Rio.
“That’s messed things up a bit,” the 22-year-old said, one week after receiving what he describes as the “most pleasurable, anxious, emotional” phone call of his life from Rob Denmark, confirming Olympic selection in the latest step of a “whirlwind” season.
