Calling all bibliophiles — The Last Bookstore is California’s largest used-and-new book and record store and one of our favourite places to while away a few hours. The store is a softly lit, labyrinthine collection of books and records and it hosts literary, musical and theatrical events, too. Its current home is a sprawling 22,000 sq.ft. space, but it began rather more humbly back in 2005, in a downtown Los Angeles loft. The name was chosen ironically, but with bookstores closing at a record rate it gets more apt every day (their website asks: “What are you waiting for? We won’t be here for ever”). Now The Last Book Store has become one of the largest independent bookstores in the world still standing. Browse over 250,000 books, bring your own to trade in and you might just discover your new favourite book.
