Escaping homophobic abuse at home in Russia, singer Saint Daniel – aka Danila Stepin – moved to the UK and found refuge in song

How did you settle on the stage name Saint Daniel?

My actual name, Danila, confuses people here [in the UK]. I’ve been asked countless times why I have a female name, but back in Russia it is considered very masculine. As a child [though] I seemed very non-binary – people called me “kid” because it was hard to determine whether I was a boy or a girl.
