From 2030, five years ahead of mainland Europe, the only new cars you’ll be able to buy in the UK will be fully electric. Even fuel-efficient hybrids, which meld increasingly smaller combustion engines and electric motors to overcome a car-charging network that’s somewhat behind the curve, will be gone.
It’s hard to argue against the trend, so long as you look past a Dark Ages electric infrastructure that’s not yet ready, and renewables that on some days don’t deliver. Because when there’s no wind or sun to generate any electricity, all you’ve done is move your car’s emissions from local to national level, en route to global.
