PREPARE YOUR HELLEBORES FOR SPRING FLOWERING
Gardens are looking wintry now but soon Christmas roses (Helleborus niger) will open their white, saucer-shaped flowers, followed by Lenten hellebores (H. x hybridus) blooming around the start of Lent in late-February or early-March. These will overlap with a more muted display from the unfortunately named ‘stinking hellebore’ (H. foetidus) but en masse, the maroon-rimmed, pale-green flowers look great against their skirts of darker foliage and these self-seeders are useful for growing in dry, shady spots.
