RETRO Redo

BY CHRISTEN HONG

It’s not surprising that the kitchen is the most popular room to remodel, as it’s become a family gathering space in most homes. When designer Karl Utzman of Design Studio West created this lively green kitchen in San Diego, California, he had more than just function in mind. “The home itself is a 1930s craftsmanstyle bungalow, and it was important for the homeowner that the kitchen felt like it belonged in the original home,” he says. The mission was to create a brand new kitchen that emanated ‘30s country charm. The entire kitchen was removed except for the California cooler, which they kept to add to the authenticity of the space.

The cherry wood tabletop was made to match the door, which was part of the original 1930s home.
