SILVER-HAIRED SURVIVALISTS

PREPAREDNESS TIPS FOR SENIOR CITIZENS
Have a clear plan in place for any in-home caregivers so there are backups in case the primary person can’t be there.

It seems as if it wasn’t all that long ago that 70 years of age seemed ancient. With the advancements in modern medicine, as well as closer attention to health and diet, people today are not only living longer, they are, on the whole, also far more active at advanced ages than people were in the past. So-called “baby boomers”—those born between 1946 and 1964—comprise roughly 20 percent of the population in the United States.

While seniors have the same basic preparedness concerns as everyone else, some of those needs are a bit more critical. Most of them are not insurmountable, though. They just require a little more planning or effort to handle.

PRESCRIPTIONS

For right or wrong, we are a nation of pill-poppers. It seems that no matter what the ailment is, there’s a medication for it, along with a slew of others to counteract side effects. Medications for heart conditions and such can truly be life-critical. Others can cause severe issues if the patient were to suddenly stop taking them.

Of course, running to the pharmacy in the middle of a crisis might not be feasible. Even if the store is open, and they have what you need, getting there and back could be difficult, at best. With that in mind, it would be ideal to have at least one full month’s worth of prescription medications on hand at all times. But accomplishing that can be tricky.
