LISTEN AND LEARN

THE KEY TO EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION IS UNDERSTANDING WHAT YOU HEAR.

THE MORE ADEPT WE ARE AT COMMUNICATING WITH THOSE AROUND US, THE LESS LIKELY WE ARE TO END UP IN DISAGREEMENTS STEMMING FROM SIMPLE MISUNDERSTANDINGS.

If you were to ask a group of people for their opinions regarding which skill sets would be desirable from a survival and preparedness standpoint, you’d probably hear answers such as marksmanship, first aid, food preservation and navigation. If you let the discussion go on for a little while, you might even have someone mention skills such as reloading ammunition or tanning animal hides.

Interpersonal communication doesn’t even make the top 10 list for many people. In fact, in the last several years, it seems there has been a shift in attitude when it comes to communicating with others.

Not all that long ago, it wasn’t uncommon to spend a fair amount of time talking to family and friends on the telephone. Today, we’ll patiently stare right at our phone as it rings. Once it stops, we’ll pick it up and send a quick text to the person who called, asking what they wanted. Having to actually speak with someone annoys us. It just takes too long; and we have better things to do, right?

This shift in attitude has resulted in a deterioration of our conversational skills and of our ability to communicate effectively with one another. The success of any group will largely depend upon the ability of the members to get along. That absolutely will not happen without good communication. Therefore, it is a good idea to brush up on, and practice, a few basic communication skills.
