VOLQUARTSEN’S VM-22 OFFERS THE IDEAL SURVIVAL RIFLE
PHOTOS BY GARRETT LUCAS

There is one gun a dedicated survivalist should never be without: That would be one chambered in .22 Long Rifle. Most experienced survivalists already know this, but for those who are just getting in the game, this is an essential part of the survivalist’s kit—especially for long-term scenarios.

Now, some folks are partial to .22 pistols, and that's just fine. To each his own. But, for the specific purposes for which I think the .22 LR round is best suited, a rifle is the better option. Rifles have a longer sight radius for the iron sights and, depending on which model you pick, rifles are much easier to accessorize with scopes, lights, bipods, ammo pouches and red-dot sights.

This is especially true for Volquartsen Custom’s new VM-22. This rifle is a combination of Volquartsen’s Superlite Barreled Action and Magpul’s new X-22 Hunter Stock.

My review sample’s color was Flat Dark Earth. Magpul’s X-22 Hunter stock is a lightweight polymer stock with a deep pistol grip and the M-LOK rail-attachment slots for adding accessories. But, because this package was designed to be a lightweight hunting rifle (5 pounds, 4 ounces base weight), you might not want to go crazy with the add-on toys. Aside from the attributes already mentioned, the X-22 Hunter Stock is also adjustable for length of pull and comb height—provided you buy the optional comb attachments. Just a little tinkering here and there, and it doesn’t take much time to really make this your rifle.

SUPERLITE BARRELED ACTION

A side from its compatibiity with the standard magazines, the VM-22 can be outfitted with either the Ruger BX-25 magazine or the BX-25 x 2 magazine, which is shown in the picture. These magazines can be used to easily carry additional ammunition or to facilitate a more effective defensive response from the .22 rifle because of its semiautomatic rate of fire.
