Tribal pieces from a good private collection were the major draw at one of the regular Militaria and Ethnographica sales at Tennants on March 8.
Two of the pieces which “exceeded all expectations”, according to auctioneer David Hall, are illustrated here.
A 19th century 2ft 11in high Aboriginal carved wood parrying shield. Carved with a band of graduated lozenges to the front and with an integral carved handle to the reverse, it went at £7000, 10 times the top estimate, to an Australian dealer.
