In recent years, Bonhams has uncovered several previously unrecorded English Golden Age clocks and at the sale of Fine Clocks on June 29 it will be presenting a recently discovered longcase clock by London maker John Fromanteel.
In 1658, Fromanteel brought pendulum technology from Amsterdam to London, thereby revolutionising clock accuracy and design.
The clock (right) is thought to have been left in a house bought by the vendor’s father after the war and is described as in ‘barn find’ condition. It is dated to the third quarter of the 17th century and its formerly ebonised case has a rising hood with original iron spoon lock. The estimate is £8000-12,000.
