BRENDAN O’Hara, MP for Argyll and Bute, is supporting online safety campaigner Internet Matters, which offers help to schools and parents.
Internet Matters, which aims to help parents keep children safe online, held a joint parliamentary dropin session with Google to showcase the tools they both have available for parents and schools, in helping to ensure children’s online safety. Mr O’Hara said: ‘As children increasingly live their lives in a digital world, internet safety is becoming more of a pressing issue for teachers and schools. All children should be able to enjoy the wealth of information and entertainment available online in a way that is as safe and age appropriate as possible. Building children’s digital resilience is a key life-skill that is needed for young people today.’
While Internet Matters’ expert and comprehensive advice for teachers, schools and parents is all online, Google is taking its online safety tips and products on the road with its successful Internet Legends initiative. Google has already developed online safety tools such as its Safe Search feature which filters potentially offensive content, and the YouTube Kids app which allows families to watch child-friendly programmes with peace of mind.
