SOPHIE FLYNN, OF THE BRITISH ATHLETICS SUPPORTERS CLUB, RECALLS A TOP SUMMER SO FAR AND LOOKS AHEAD TO THE OLYMPICS
IT’S BEEN a summer bursting with sport, from Euro 2016 to Wimbledon. There have been a number of standout performances – Lewis Hamilton winning the British Grand Prix, Wales getting to the semi-finals of the Euros and Andy Murray winning a second Wimbledon title – as well as disappointments for British sporting fans, like the England football team. It’s also been a hectic few months for athletes with the Diamond League, British and European Championships.
BIRMINGHAM DIAMOND LEAGUE
At the beginning of June, I was lucky enough to to be in attendance at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham to see eight stadium records fall and six world leads set. Eilidh Doyle stole the show in a thrilling but controversial 400m hurdles, for which the finish-line still appeared to some to show her ahead of Cassandra Tate.
