CRAZINESS AND CONTROVERSY IN THE WORLD OF ATHLETICS
TO coin a phrase used by Athletics Weekly contributor and commentator Cathal Dennehy, Irish sprinter Phil Healy rose “from the depths of hell” to viral superstardom with a scarcely-believable anchor leg to win the 4x400m at the Irish Universities for University College Cork (UCC) in April.

Relay heroine: Phil Healy
Drafted in just 20 minutes before the final to run for UCC, Healy had already competed four times at the championships but never before in the 400m, and managed to claw her team back from fifth going into the final leg, some 120m back, to snatch the win at the line.
The footage, called in iconic fashion by Dennehy and colleague Ronan Duggan, has racked up more than three million views on YouTube, giving the Irish international and the country’s sport more fame than either could have ever imagined.
