Restrained in victory: Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad kept his top on this time
MAHIEDINE MEKHISSIBENABBAD showed the class that has twice taken him to Olympic silver with an easy victory as he took four seconds out of the opposition in an untroubled 63-second last circuit with an outside water jump.
Two years ago in Zurich, he crossed the line first but was disqualified for celebrating prematurely before the line with his vest off. This time he waited until after the race to unclothe and keep the title in French hands after Yoann Kowal had benefited from his antics in Zurich. Kowal battled hard to defend his title but had to settle for third.
Second went to yet another Kenyan-born Turk. Aras Kaya, who was formerly Amos Kibitok, led through 1000m in a pedestrian 2:56.99 before picking it up through 2000m in 5:44.46.
