THE Italian high jumper had been developing a good reputation as a championship performer, having won the world indoor and European outdoor titles in 2016.

Until July 2015, he had not jumped higher than 2.31m, but his improvement saw him climb to 2.39m for second in the world rankings in July this year. But at the same meeting where he set this Italian record, on a subsequent attempt at 2.41m he injured his ankle (left), and this left him out of Rio.
