Juno Dawson meets trans actress DANIELA VEGA, who is creating a lot of interest this awards season

IT CAN’T HAVE ESCAPED YOUR ATTENTION that transgender representation in the media has surged forwards in recent years. From indie hits such as Tangerine to the more mainstream I Am Cait or Orange is the New Black, trans people — notably trans women — are taking centre stage. Now, critics are murmuring that awards could be within reach for one trans performer: relative newcomer Daniela Vega.

Daniela, 28, stars in the Chilean film A Fantastic Woman, which is rightly garnering rave reviews. In Sebastián Lelio’s very loose reworking of Virginia Woolf’s Orlando, she plays Marina, a young transgender woman in a loving relationship with DILFy Orlando (Francisco Reyes). It’s not really a spoiler to reveal that Orlando keels over and dies 10 minutes in, leaving poor Marina at the mercy of his cruel ex-wife, his brutal son and a suspicious detective.
