Real life

Photography Markus Bidaux

On 19 March 1974, a very special lady was born. I remember the day: I was ive years old and full of excitement awaiting the return of my mother from the hospital with my baby sister. Little did we know the complications the little girl would have to endure and the fact that she would never live at home with us.

Bianca was born with Down’s syndrome, a genetic condition that happens as a result of an extra chromosome in the gene thread. It results in physical features such as a small nose and mouth, lat nasal bridge and back of the head, and limited height. The condition delays neurological development and typically results in a lower IQ, and can cause other issues with hearing and vision, and even the ability to speak.
