BUSINESS PROFILE Henry Holland

Fashion designer, House of Holland

Henry Holland grew up in Ramsbottom, near Manchester, where there was no fashion industry. His mother encouraged his creative nature and he moved to London to study journalism but quickly realised that his heart lay elsewhere. He became the fashion editor of a magazine aimed at teenagers straight out of university before starting a simple t-shirt business as a bit of a joke. But it turned into a global success and is still going strong a decade later. His personality can be summed up in three words: bold, playful and exciting.

Was fashion an important part of your childhood?

I grew up around a lot of stylish women in my family who were always dressed elegantly. I would style up my mum and she would take me out of school to go shopping when she needed an outfit for a big event — she’d be fined for that today! Clothes were an important part of my upbringing. I would swap between living at my mum’s and dad’s houses and all I’d take with me were clothes. They were my identity wherever I was based.
