Where would we be without the rock titans of the ninety seventies and eighties? Specifically, where would modern guitar music be without the
artistic vision of Queen, whose classic years were underpinned by the understated virtuosity of John Deacon? Counter to my supposition last month that we bassists are not in fact the ‘quiet ones’ of any given band, Deacon remains the most restrained member of Queen, allowing his bass to do the talking while the others enjoy the limelight. Since the premature departure of Queen singer Freddie Mercury in 1991, Deacon has chosen to live out of the public eye. That doesn’t stop us saluting his work, though. Here we take a close look at the quiet genius’s catalogue, gear and techniques.
