Our columnist on why we should be striking a balance
We are all, by now, aware of the need for us to live a more sustainable life – to consume less of the Earth’s precious resources, and to use those we do need mindfully. But it’s fascinating to me that the very culture which is built around unsustainable consumption also tells us all to ‘work hard, play hard’. I’ve recently started exploring the possibilities of living a more balanced, sustainable life – every single day, as a daily practice. It’s so strange that in no version of success do people talk about it as being the ability to live a balanced life – a life in which we feel healthy, well rested, happy and fulfilled, every day. A life in which we feel a glow of contentment, and we reach the next decade feeling nourished. Not days working towards some future goal, punishing our bodies in the gym or working to earn lots of money for some version of future success, measured by how we look or what we are able to consume.
