EBA corresponden
SAMMY McCARTHY always drew huge crowds when he was boxing, and there were around 500 at his funeral on February 28. Many of us couldn’t get inside, and watched proceedings on a TV screen. Sammy came from Stepney, and was a Vice-President of the London EBA, so naturally there were a good many LEBA members there. But there were also members of Scotland, Leeds, Central (Midlands), Home Counties, Wales, Croydon, Brighton, Essex and Hastings EBAs. Few have been more universally popular. LEBA President Stephen Powell gave a superb eulogy on behalf of the boxing fraternity, and said it was a great honour to do so. There was also a brief but heartfelt tribute from member Ronnie Cooper, who described Sammy as “like a brother.” Secretary Ray Caulfield produced – at short notice – an excellent tribute to Sammy in the form of a booklet, including articles and many photos, including several of Sammy in action.
