Inspiration

Dramatic transformation

The designers at Giles Pike Architects have successfully modernised this traditional terraced property in south London by introducing expansive new swathes of glazing that draw natural light right into the heart of the dwelling. They were also able to reconfigure the interior layout of the house by removing the original staircase and constructing a brand new flight in the lightweight steel and glass tower on the building’s side elevation. As well as being visually striking, the extension provides a bright and airy space from which occupants can enjoy views to both sides of the property as they move through the building.

PROJECT OF THE MONTH

An extension with a view

by Eurocell

This attractive two-bedroom cottage in Shropshire has been reconfigured to take advantage of stunning views over the Brecon Beacons thanks to the addition of a bright and airy extension. The roof of the new zone was constructed using Eurocell’s Equinox system, a highly-insulated, tiled warm roof structure that enables homeowners to retain vaulted ceilings.

This particular roof – the largest the company has ever erected in the UK – forms a distinctive P shape with five hips and a valley. In most cases, the system is offered as a ‘one box’ solution. However, the extensive selection of parts for this particular kit were delivered to the site on a 38-tonne trailer.

The structure, which features an external tiled finish along with integrated roof windows, took only three days to assemble before the contractor and his team were able to start fitting the insulation. The final result is truly eye-catching, and the homeowners are delighted with their cosy new snug, which benefits from both high ceilings and expansive glazing.
