SHELLFISH monitoring work by Argyll and Bute Council has identified raised levels of naturally-occurring toxins in several areas, including Campbeltown Loch.
The algal toxins accumulate in molluscs, such as mussels, oysters, cockles and razor clams, and when levels breach statutory limits, harvesting of affected species is prohibited.
Areas that currently have toxin lev els above the legally permitted limit and remain closed are Kilbrannan Sound (Campbeltown Loch), Kildalloig Bay, Carradale Bay, Machrie Bay (Arran), Saddell Bay and Pirnmill (Arran).
