Ericsson rolls out briefcase-sized mobile towers

In partnership with Vodafone, the Swedish technology company will deploy new mini base-stations across the UK to boost mobile coverage in urban areas.

Called the Ericsson Radio System, the mini base-station radio units aim to give a greater number of customers a more reliable mobile connection. The company reports that the units offer three times the capacity–not only helping meet increasing data demands but making it easier to deploy on rooftops in urban areas–and are more energy efficient. A key selling point is that engineers can simply carry the equipment up stairs to a rooftop and install the unit without the need of cranes disturbing city streets below. The new masts are also cheaper and will therefore help speed up the process of extending mobile coverage in city areas with patchy coverage.
