Municipal elections in Brazil are always an interesting test of the national political sentiment–coming halfway between the presidential elections. The elections at the end of 2016–important in their own right as deciding the winning mayoral candidate in 5,568 cities and 57,949 council seats–were scrutinised even more closely, coming as they did shortly after the controversial impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff.
