PORSCHE 911 vs ALPINE A110 RALLY HEROES FOR THE ROAD
The return of the Alpine name has not only resulted in the creation of a brilliant new sports car (Future classic, October), but also revived some wonderful memories of a golden era in rallying. The FIA’s all-new World Rally Championship was inaugurated in 1973, and the rear-engined Alpine-Renaults dominated from the outset, securing six victories from thirteen events, with Jean-Claude Andruet winnin g the Monte, Jean-Pierre Nicolas taking the spoils in Corsica, and Jean-Luc Thérier picking up wins in Portugal, Greece and Sanremo. Here, Bernard Darniche takes the A110 to its third victory of the year, the Rallye du Maroc, with fellow Frenchman Alain Mahé on the maps. So it conquered the stages, but can the A110 better the benchmark Porsche 911? Find out inside.
