That lake outside your door is ripe for the drinking—you just have to clean up the baddies first. We help you filter your options

THE density of water is a beautiful thing: one litre of H2O weighs exactly one kilogram. Which makes it pretty easy to figure out that lugging 25-litre jugs of clean city water from the SUV to the cottage is a task best assigned to the Snapchatting teenager with the biggest biceps. Multiply the effort over many weekends and seasons, and it’s clear that just stocking up on simple drinking water equals tonnes of work.

Drawing water from the lake is, of course, just one way to solve such heavy water woes, as is drilling a well or even capturing rainwater. Yet no matter what the source, making water drinkable usually requires some level of treatment. So what are the options for those who want quality water that’s safe for consumption straight from the tap?

While a well might seem like the quickest route to liquid gold, a new one can cost anywhere from $4,000 to $20,000, depending on the depth, diameter, and location. And while there’s a chance the water that springs from a well will be perfectly potable, as with sunshine on long weekends, there are no guarantees. Aside from needing basic filters to remove iron and hardness, a well might also require a range of other filters to gatekeep the 10,000-odd things that dissolve in water as it meanders through earth on its way to your hole in the ground.
