It cuts. It trims. It sands. It scrapes. Seriously, what can’t the oscillating tool do? ≫

A favourite tool is like a good dog—it always does as it’s told. A cordless oscillating tool, with its myriad blades and gentle buzzing, is often that most faithful of companions, happily obeying the cottager’s commands to saw, slice, trim, rasp, cut, sand, or scrape, often in places where no other saw will dare to tread.

The awesomeness of the oscillating saw stems from its small size, about that of a swollen hot dog bun, and its many blades that quickly connect and disconnect via a spring-loaded arbour or clamp. Each blade has a specific purpose, and the right one will quickly subdue many a compound. Sheet metal, PVC, plywood, masonry, grout, drywall, rubber, foam, fibreglass, and even leather will all succumb to the correct blade in one of these power scalpels. Want your existing door jambs to sit flush atop new pine floorboards? Done. Prefer to notch a post without removing it? Zip! Need to cut through a nail that can’t be pulled by a hammer? Zing! Got to replace a section of cottage waterline? No sweat.

First used in orthopaedics to delicately cut plaster casts, the oscillating tool works by hypervibrating its blade back and forth in minuscule strokes at variable speeds up to 300 times per second; new antivibration designs make it easy to hold and control. And, unlike a circular or a reciprocating saw, it won’t kick back. Good dog.
