Bundled against the vicissitudes of early spring weather, burly, furry-coated bumblebees are the principal pollinators of wildflowers in leafless forests when few other insects are on the wing. One of the first seen of Canada’s 42 kindred bumblers, the distinctive tricoloured bumblebee surfaces, across most of the country, on sunny days as willow catkins unfurl and temperatures near 12°C.
