Dear Cottage Life

This summer, I took great pleasure in sitting on the porch with the Cottage Life colouring page (Early Summer ’16) and brand new pencil crayons. While sunlight filtered through the trees, loons called, chipmunks rustled in the leaves, and gentle waves lapped the shore, I coloured and enjoyed my cottage life.—MONICA HAILSTONE, DEVIL LAKE, ONT.

I read “Don’t Move! There’s a Wasp!” (Fall ’16), and I was particularly interested, due to my own experiences. Back in 1959, I was a Junior Forest Ranger, working on what became Champlain Park, west of Mattawa, Ont. We were clearing a stand of deadwood with five-pound axes, and one birch tree I chopped had a yellow jacket nest in the rotted base. They started to swarm me, and I knocked off my hard hat trying to swat them away. I was stung about 30 times, almost all on my head.

Five years later, while driving through Algonquin Provincial Park with my wife, Betty, I was stung on the arm. I went into anaphylactic shock 10 minutes later. Since then, I’ve gone into shock three times, but now I always carry an EpiPen. My shock was almost as severe when I read your article that did not mention how necessary it is for all those who are allergic to carry these small devices at all times. They are truly life-saving.
