As soon as our boys were old enough, we started a mid-January cottage ritual: we take our van down a gravel road just outside town, about 30 minutes from our family camp, and stop where we can visualize carving out a fresh snowshoe trail to the lake’s shore, through a woodsy maze of spruce and birch.
This annual trek, which takes less than an hour, never gets old. There are almost always fresh tracks left by moose and snowshoe hare. It’s a neat feeling, knowing that a hulking moose trudged through the night before. When my boys were small, I was always at the front of the line, breaking trail. But now that they’re in their teens, I follow them, trying to see if I can make it all the way to the lake without falling face first or slowly tilting sideways. One misstep puts you over your waist in the white stuff, and you end up trying to hoist yourself up with a branch (if one is within reach).
